Hundru Falls is located in Ranchi District, Jharkhand, 45 km from Ranchi city on the Subarnarekha River. The river drops 98 m (322 ft) over layered granite steps — making it the 34th highest waterfall in India and the highest in Jharkhand. It is at its most spectacular from August to November when post-monsoon flows are at peak volume.

The Subarnarekha's 98 m Granite Plunge — Jharkhand's Most Powerful Waterfall
A Glimpse into History
Origins – Subarnarekha's Sacred Descent
The Subarnarekha ("golden line") River originates near Ranchi and flows through the Chota Nagpur Plateau. At Hundru, the river encounters a dramatic fault in the Precambrian granite basement — creating the 98 m step-fall. The name "Hundru" derives from the Mundari tribal word for the rocky gorge below the falls.
Evolution – Hydroelectric Development
A hydroelectric dam was constructed upstream of Hundru Falls in the 1970s, regulating the Subarnarekha's flow. Post-dam, the falls' volume during the dry season (Jan–May) is reduced but still substantial. The Jharkhand Tourism department developed a ropeway, viewpoint platforms, and steps to the riverbed in the 2000s.
Modern Era – Weekend Tourism Hub
Hundru Falls is Ranchi's most-visited day-trip destination, drawing over 3 lakh visitors annually. The Jharkhand government listed it under its "Waterfall Tourism Circuit" connecting Hundru, Jonha, and Dassam Falls into a single guided tour route, formalised under JTDC (Jharkhand Tourism Development Corporation) in 2015.
Significance
Hundru is the highest waterfall in Jharkhand at 98 m, situated in a Precambrian granite gorge of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The falls hold tribal sacred significance — Mundari communities have considered the gorge below a site of the river deity for centuries. The surrounding forest is part of the Subarnarekha River watershed, a critical water source for eastern Jharkhand and parts of West Bengal and Odisha.
Festivals & Events
Sarhul Festival (March–April)
The Munda and Ho tribal communities celebrate Sarhul — the spring festival of the Sal tree flower — near the Subarnarekha River and at falls sites including Hundru. Floral offerings, tribal dance, and community prayer mark the event. It is the most spiritually significant festival for Jharkhand's indigenous communities.
Karma Festival (August–September)
The Karma tree worship festival coincides with peak waterfall season at Hundru. Tribal youth carry Karma branches to the falls and perform traditional dance rituals at the riverbank below — combining natural beauty and indigenous heritage in a unique waterside celebration.
Did You Know?
The pool at the base of Hundru Falls is deep enough to have been used as a natural swimming hole but swimming is officially banned — the current beneath the falls creates invisible undertows that have caused drowning incidents. The mist from the 98 m drop creates a localised micro-climate at the base, keeping the gorge temperature 5–8°C cooler than the surrounding plateau even in May.
